I'm aware that under normal cicumstances f/t students can't claim
housing benefit/LHA, but what about a retired person already
receiving HB who takes a f/t post-grad course -- can they continue to
get HB, and at the same rate as before? TIA

No idea. Have you asked the housing benefit department at your
council?

This newsgroup is just about dead now, there used to be a couple of
posters who worked in a Housing Benefit department but they've long
since departed and there's no-one left with HB experience.

You should be able to get an answer to your query at the
moneysavingexpert.com benefit forum:

You'll need to register first in order to be able to post.

Okay thanks. What a shame about this ng. What happened -- flame wars,
trolls, spammers? I used to lurk quite regularly but haven't for a few
months.

Like a lot of newsgroups, the amount of threads, posts and posters has
been dwindling over the years - this breakdown from google statistics
shows that posts per month for this newsgroup have dropped dramatically
in recent years:

http://groups.google.co.uk/group/uk.gov.social-security/about?hl=en

The amount of posts would be even less were it not for a number of
threads with a large amount of posts.

Most people just don't have access to newsgroups these days, at one time
AOL (for example) carried newsgroups and as these companies dropped
newsgroup access the amount of posters began to die off. For newsgroups
like this one, which didn't have a massively high posting rate anyway,
this combined with the rise of message boards seems to have been the
death knell for the group. In addition a handful of posters who made a
large contribution to the board have now seemingly gone forever.

It's still sad though when you see once thriving newsgroups now as dead
as a door nail...
