Tony McNulty Employment Minister claims 60 grand for using his parents house
as a base. Apparently he spent the odd day there doing constituency work. He
did not stay overnight but still claimed for it as a "second home". His own
house is a few miles away in Hammersmith.

How the hell can they get away with robbing tax payers like that, its not
like his parents were renting the family home out to him. Where the hell
does the figure 60k come into it for visiting your parents? What sort of
work was he doing that could only be done at his parents house?

Fiddling bastards the lot of them.

Ah, so must cut down on the number of fiddling bastards. Does that
include people fiddling things other than rent?
Why not run for office? Get it, the JC won't hassle you so much. :)

Anyone from here want to run for office? It would though require work
to be done, so not to everyone's liking.

Apparently his office is within walking distance of his parents house. I
love the wording they used when describing this fraud, "MP's have a right to
claim expenses to make up their pay" thats why they have these expenses,
like 100k + PA is not enough to live on for doing nothing. If they can
fiddle within the law, so can I ;)

I wonder what HMRC would have to say about this?

Expenses are to re-imburse costs wholly incurred as a result of work,
although there's often an element of profit involved e.g. allowances and
mileage rates. If MPs are 'topping up' their wages rather than
reclaiming a genuine work expense then HMRC ought to be assessing tax
liability even if it is within the commons rules.

If a S/E plummer tried to claim his parents mortgage cost's because he
did his books there or stored tools in the garge he'd be accused of
fiddling his tax and slapped with a punitive charge.

As HMRC is beholden to Darling and he's not about to screw another
cabinet member (let's not forget the second home secretary), HMRC will
have now't to say.

Of course the sad part of all this is that impressionable people like
niteawk see gov ministers behaving in a cavalier and morally wrong
manner with the taxpayers money. They then make little distinction
between that and their own cash in hand work etc. Suddenly we are a
nation of corrupt expense fiddlers with politicians holding the new low
ground.

Of course he would challenged about it, but there is not much they can do if
he was using his parents house as an office as long as it is registered, it
is tax deductable. What do you think HMRC would say if he claimed his
retired parents were directors of the company and split the profits x 3
reducing his tax bill to next to nothing.

The government are the biggest thieves in the land. They decide their own
pay and it still isnt enough for them. You name it and they claim it. There
is nothing that they do not help themselves to out of the public purse. They
have second jobs, G Brown consultant to Tesco. They create jobs for
themselves, T Blair peace envoy? and when they leave the cabinet half a
dozen times, like fkin yoyo's some of them, Mandleson? they end up being
paid as consultants to government awarded contracts ala Blunket on A4e, or
working for the BBC as directors of BS. They all end up as directors or
consultants for large companies who were awarded multi million pound
contracts by the government. Of course this is not a fiddle, its pure luck
that they land these jobs that they rarely if ever go to. Cant see Brown
sitting on the board of Tesco when he is supposed to be running the country.

Ummm....self employed can claim for use of home as office and claim
for one room.
Usually in own home though I have known one guy who used his sister's
house successfully.

Claiming for mortgage is tricky, not exactly recommended.

Precisely - they look at the proportion of the cost DIRECTLY incurred as
an expense. Using the parents hse a few times would not justify
claiming 60k in expenses for Mr S/E so why should an Cabinet Minister?

Tax the buggers - it worked for al capone

I wonder how much JSa that £60K could amount to. Yet the government
insists on calling people who claim benefits scroungers and targets
them with horrific anti fruad 'we're watching you' campaigns. Who was
watching Mr McNulty who even has his own office in his constituency so
he has no need to use his parent's house. It's shameful but it's a
sign of the times.

Yes, direct expenses have something to be said for them.
I rather doubt he'll get put in prison for it - unlike you or me who
